Don’t call this no-makeup makeup. What at first glance seemed like barely touched faces at many of the Spring 2009 shows was actually the result of deft and calculated handiwork. Makeup artists groomed skin to perfection with foundations, concealers, powders and highlighters. “It’s all about building the face,” says Pat McGrath, makeup maestro and global cosmetics creative design director for P&G. Features were then strategically defined and contoured without using a lot of colour. “We did beautiful browns around the eyes, and shimmers on the nose, in the corners of the eyes, on the cupid’s bow and on the cheekbones as well,” she says of the “statuesque” look she created at Prada. At Dolce & Gabbana, McGrath amped up a similar look with espresso liner around the eyes, slightly winged out. If this is the modern version of natural, bring it on.
