Halston Fall 2010
Marios Schwab unveiled his first collection for Halston in a dimly-lit warehouse space in New York’s Hell’s Kitchen. The label, which has had a revolving door of owners and designers since Roy Halston Frowick died in 1990, has struggled to articulate a cohesive vision following the acquisition of the brand in 2007 by Harvey Weinstein and the private equity fund Hilco Consumer Capital.
Last year, Halston’s management team hired a young London-based designer, Marios Schwab, for its collection, and more recently tapped Sarah Jessica Parker to be the designer of the brand’s lower priced “Halston Heritage” line.
“It’s been a long time coming but I think we got it right,” said Mr. Weinstein, who was looking decidedly unfashionable with his signature shirt-un-tucked look, at the fashion presentation in a warehouse in Hell’s Kitchen. As he walked around the perimeter of the room, where models lounged on metallic props looking bored, he said, “Sarah Jessica has been a huge influence—she’s coming in ten minutes,” he added.
Ms. Parker, who arrived shortly thereafter wearing black cigarette pants and a copper silk top, her hair perfectly highlighted, rushed to embrace chief executive Bonnie Takhar. “It’s beautiful! It’s beautiful!” said Ms. Parker, in between air kisses. And she wrote, “He was talented well beyond his years, and the seriousness and unrivaled talent which he applied to his work is in bountiful display year after year and collection after collection. There has never been anyone like him. And there simply never will be. It has been a privilege for all of us to know you. You will be indescribably missed.”
“I wanted to make something modern, shrinking the proportion a little bit, showing the leg, and giving hints of a mysterious woman,” said Mr. Schwab, who had his own collection in London prior to joining Halston as creative director last year. “She is open minded. She is the daughter of the original Halston woman.”
Fashion dealmaker Marvin Traub, who ran Bloomingdale’s during Halston’s heyday—and introduced Mr. Weinstein to Hilco—was also making the rounds with his wife. “It’s very interesting,” said Mr. Traub, 84, as he surveyed the scene. “Certainly there’s an influence of Halston, but it’s a step forward.”
